Covewood Drive’s First Block Party!

The residents of Covewood Drive (off 13th Street) held their first annual block party on Labor Day weekend. The event will be long remembered as a resounding success, considering that it lasted from 12 noon until 11:00 p.m.!
The idea of having a block party had been tossed around over the years and was finally planned for the unofficial “last weekend of summer”. It was agreed to keep things simple—each family would bring enough food for themselves and had the choice to bring along a dish of something to share with their neighbors.
Along with food, residents also pitched in with grills, tables, chairs, and paper goods. When everyone began arriving at noontime, they were all pleasantly surprised at the delicious variety of dishes that began appearing, especially at the dessert table!
But apart from enjoying a great meal, the best part of the party by far was that all of the guests had the chance to spend time together. Each one had the opportunity to talk with neighbors they might not see otherwise, enjoy a few laughs, and even mend some fences. It was also a great opportunity for the newer people on the street to get to meet all of their neighbors.
As the sun went down, a portable fireplace was lit and provided some welcome warmth. A few of the guests were also talented guitar players and provided music and song for the crowd.
It was so much fun that another block party is already being planned for Memorial Day weekend. Why not do the same on your street next year?
