MLRA Dive Team

MLRA Dive Team

The MLRA Dive Team has been formed in 2022 with the immediate goal of developing a cadre of volunteers who will search for and collect the invasive Chinese Mystery Snails to remove them from Mousam Lake. These large conical snails are taking over the habitat of the small native snails and live in waters from the shoreline to a depth of 12 to 15 feet. We are developing expertise in this initiative due to coaching from our counterparts on the Square Pond Improvement Association, who have been doing this for eleven years.

A benefit of developing this expertise with diving and providing hands-on removal of invasives would also benefit the Mousam Lake landowners and recreational users of the lake in the event that invasive plants are discovered in our ecosystem.

The MLRA Dive Team has some equipment, including a Surface Breather, dive flags, dive catch bags and a few miscellaneous items.  Please bring your own personal gear to use if you have it (wetsuit, mask, snorkel,  flippers).  Some of us have been trained on the Surface Breather which supports two divers.  If you have snorkel gear and want to try the breather, we will help to train you on that.

Safety will be our top priority.  All divers will have a surface support person in a kayak with a dive flag above them. If you have a kayak and are willing to be surface support, please bring it if you can (preferably by water).

We have the following positions we could use help with:

  • Divers (snorkel/surface breather, scuba)
  • Surface support, spotter for each diver
  • Recording  (registration, waivers, photos, snail weight)
  • Another pontoon boat to shuttle divers around (optional but nice)
  • Post Dive Snacks/water for volunteers would be appreciated
  • Trash & Snail disposal at Acton Transfer Station
  • Dive Tank Filler (A possibility going forward)

If you know of someone that would like to be on the dive list, or involved in any way, please have them contact us at: mlradiveteam@gmail.com

We are also looking for donations of dive equipment, weight belts, scuba gear, etc.  If you are willing to volunteer your time and/or equipment, please email us at: general@mousamlake.org
Thank you!
